The Challenge

Tucson Water initiated an extensive well replacement program to address municipal production wells that had exceeded their expected life cycle. Replacing these aging wells required careful construction oversight and detailed evaluation of subsurface and aquifer conditions to help ensure each new well could reliably support the utility’s water supply needs.

The program required technical groundwater expertise throughout well construction and testing to verify construction details, understand site geology, and establish appropriate operating parameters for each replacement well.

Our Solution

Spheros Environmental provided well construction oversight and testing services for five Tucson Water replacement wells.

The team logged subsurface geology and compiled geophysical logging data to characterize conditions encountered during drilling and confirm well construction details. Spheros also supported well development activities and conducted aquifer testing to evaluate the performance of each new production well.

Using the results of this testing, the team helped determine optimal production rates, pump settings, and operational duty cycles. This integrated approach provided Tucson Water with the technical information needed to optimize individual well performance and support reliable long-term operation.

Results +What makes this unique

Spheros provided construction oversight and testing services for five replacement wells, with each completed production well exceeding Tucson Water’s expectations and achieving greater well productivity than initially planned.

By integrating geologic and geophysical information with well construction oversight, development, and aquifer testing, the team was able to move beyond confirming that each well was successfully constructed. The work also helped optimize how the wells would operate, establishing production rates, pump settings, and duty cycles based on site-specific performance data.

The project demonstrates how detailed groundwater expertise and field oversight can help utilities maximize the performance of critical water supply infrastructure while replacing aging assets.
