The Challenge
California’s wildfire season has grown longer and more severe, with recent years bringing some of the deadliest and most destructive fires in history. Climate change has been identified by multiple agencies as a key driver of this trend, increasing both the frequency and intensity of wildfires. Communities like Cloverdale and Healdsburg face heightened risks to homes, infrastructure, and natural resources in the wildland urban interface (WUI).
Our Solution
Spheros Environmental (formerly Sonoma Technology), in partnership with the Wildfire Services Group, developed Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPPs) for Cloverdale and Healdsburg. Using fire-behavior modeling and GIS technology, we conducted hazard, asset, and risk assessments based on high-resolution fuels data. We created interactive online maps and collaborated with fire agencies, land managers, and community stakeholders to prioritize fuel reduction projects and recommend measures to reduce structural ignitability.

Results +What makes this unique
The CWPPs provide actionable strategies for reducing wildfire risk, protecting economic and ecological resources, and educating residents. By integrating advanced fire modeling with community engagement, these plans empower local agencies to implement targeted fuel reduction projects and improve resilience in the WUI. The inclusion of interactive maps and science-based assessments makes these CWPPs a powerful tool for proactive wildfire management.
